The Paris Motor Show has made news every year since it started in 1918. This year it’s making news of a different sort. The press is talking not only about what was there — concept cars, prototypes, and next-generation offerings — but about what (and who) was not. The Jaguar brand is one of a handful of companies being noted for their absence from one of the year’s biggest auto shows. Should Jaguar car fans (or Massachusetts Jaguar dealers) be worried? Jaguar Peabody takes a closer look.

First is exclusivity. Unlike the early 20th century, auto shows aren’t a novelty in the early 21st century. Paris must vie for attention not only with auto shows in New York, Berlin, Geneva, LA, and Tokyo, but also other trade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show, which has been a hospitable venue for the higher technology that has been a prime focus for Jaguar.

Also, there’s the changing nature of the automotive press. Instead of relying on an event to drive coverage, the Jaguar brand has been able to take control of their own message. They’re helped in this respect by the positive coverage given to the Jaguar F-PACE, Jaguar F-TYPE, and Jaguar XF over the past year. In light of that, they may have decided they could pass on Paris.

Here’s the bottom line: if you’re one of the customers served by Peabody Jaguar, we don’t suggest panicking. We love a good auto show as much as the next person, but the fact remains that the best Jaguar has to offer has always been right here at Jaguar Peabody.
